Protein intake for universal population

Protein is an important component of every existing cell in the human body. Our hair and nails are mostly made up of the proteins. Our body uses proteins to build and repair strained tissues. Therefore, protein requirement should be supplied and delivered on a regular basis and should be only restricted in case of distressing medical conditions.

Protein being a ‘macronutrient’ needs to be supplied in large amounts and its supply becomes more pivotal, as body cannot store it unlike, carbohydrates and fats. Protein deficiency can impair whole body.

Protein requirement is largely influenced by age, gender, physical activity level, biochemical parameters, nourishment status. The reference table chalked out below will help the masses to consume appropriate protein intake required in minimum amounts to perform daily functions: -

Stages of proteins requirement Per kg/body weight
Children 1.2-1.5 gms/kg body weight
Adults 0.8-1.2 gms/kg body weight
Pregnancy and lactation 0.8-1.2 gms (+0.5 gms)/kg body weight
Geriatric Age group (old age) Upto 1.2-1.6 gms/kg body weight.

As mentioned above, protein requirement is largely dependent on nitrogen balance of the body. Every aspect mentioned above determines and influences protein uptake and utilization. Reference table shown above acts a guideline to calculate and consume appropriate numbers of calories from proteins for important functions, apparently done under an expert guidance.
